There are growing calls for Cotswold District Council leader Joe Harris to step down following remarks he made during a meeting on future housing developments in Moreton-in-Marsh. Concerns have been raised that the construction of 6,300 new homes over the next 20 years could transform the market town into what some are calling “Moreton Keynes.”
During the meeting, Harris stated that the government has set a target for 15,000 new homes to be built in the Cotswolds by 2045, with Moreton set to receive a significant share of this development. However, many local residents fear that the scale of the plans will negatively impact the town’s character and infrastructure.
Adding to the controversy, Conservative Councillor Daryl Corps (Moreton West), who attended the invite-only community engagement session, claimed that in his opening remarks, Harris dismissed concerns about further development, saying:
“If anyone in the room wanted no more development in the town, then there’s the door, leave now, the exit is over there.”
The statement has sparked outrage among locals, many of whom feel that their concerns are being ignored. Some are now calling for Harris to resign, arguing that his approach to the issue is dismissive and out of touch with the community’s needs.
As debate continues, the future of Moreton-in-Marsh remains uncertain, with residents eager to have their voices heard on the large-scale housing plans, for more information click here.
