Getting your hands on 2 berth motorhomes like these proves to be a wonderful way to explore the diverse landscapes and cities of the United Kingdom.

However, like any other vehicle, motorhomes are subject to road tax, a necessary obligation imposed by the government. Understanding the costs associated with motorhome road tax is essential for any owner, enabling effective financial planning and compliance with legal requirements.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the world of motorhome road tax, explaining how it works and how much you can expect to pay.

What Is Motorhome Road Tax?

Motorhome road tax, officially known as Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) or simply road tax, is a mandatory tax imposed by the UK government on all motor vehicles driven or parked on public roads.

This tax contributes to the maintenance and improvement of the road network and is a legal requirement for all motorhome owners.

How Is Motorhome Road Tax Calculated?

The amount you pay for motorhome road tax depends on several factors, including the vehicle’s CO2 emissions, age, and fuel type.

Unlike passenger cars, motorhomes are subject to different VED rates due to their unique characteristics.

  • CO2 Emissions: For newer motorhomes (registered after March 1, 2001), road tax is determined by their CO2 emissions. The lower the emissions, the lower the tax. This means that more environmentally friendly motorhomes are rewarded with reduced road tax.
  • Age of the Motorhome: Motorhomes registered before March 1, 2001, are taxed based on their engine size, while those registered after this date are taxed based on CO2 emissions. Newer motorhomes generally benefit from lower VED rates.
  • Fuel Type: If your motorhome is powered by alternative fuels such as electricity, you may be eligible for reduced road tax as part of the government’s efforts to promote greener vehicles.

How Much Is Road Tax for a Motorhome?

The cost of motorhome road tax can vary significantly depending on the factors mentioned earlier. Here’s a breakdown of how much you can expect to pay:

CO2 Emissions-Based Tax:

  • Motorhomes with CO2 emissions below 100 g/km: These are considered ultra-low emission vehicles and qualify for the lowest road tax rates. You can expect to pay as little as £10-£30 annually.
  • Motorhomes with CO2 emissions between 101 and 225 g/km: This is the standard range for most motorhomes. Road tax in this category typically ranges from £165 to £580 per year.
  • Motorhomes with CO2 emissions over 226 g/km: If your motorhome falls into this high emissions category, you can expect to pay road tax ranging from £555 to £2,245 annually.

Engine Size-Based Tax (Pre-March 2001 Motorhomes):

  • Motorhomes with an engine size up to 1549cc: These smaller engine motorhomes usually have an annual road tax cost of £165.
  • Motorhomes with an engine size over 1549cc: Larger engine motorhomes may incur a road tax of £270 or more per year.

Electric and Alternative Fuel Motorhomes:

  • Electric motorhomes: Many electric motorhomes are eligible for a reduced rate or even exemption from road tax, making them a cost-effective and eco-friendly choice.

It’s important to note that these figures are subject to change as the government reviews and updates VED rates periodically. To get the most accurate and up-to-date information on motorhome road tax, you can visit the official government website or consult with a vehicle tax specialist.

In Summary

Understanding how much road tax you’ll need to pay for your motorhome is essential for budgeting and compliance with UK law. While road tax rates vary based on factors like CO2 emissions and vehicle age, staying informed about the latest rates will help you plan your motorhome adventures more effectively.

So, whether you own a compact camper or a spacious RV, knowing your road tax obligations will ensure smooth and enjoyable journeys on the UK’s picturesque roads.
