More and more people are using our auto submit button to get a free listing on gloucester-rd.co.uk. That is good for everyone. It means people using the site get the information they want. More people are finding the site as we climb through the rankings and we are encouraged to develop the website and ensure it continues its upward trend. We have also had a number of worthy news stories submitted and promoted events and community based initiatives, so keep them coming. Lets promote the Gloucester Road and all the Independent Traders on it. Together we can really make a difference.

As part of the 16th Film Festival, Encounters are showing a series of short films on a solar powered cinema across Bristol’s Parks. We are lucky enough to have one of those showings in our very own St Andrews Park on the 10th of September 2010. You can get more details and a link to there website on our events calendar.

This is yet another fantastic initiative which brings people together in St Andrew Park which has enjoyed huge success due to the fantastic efforts of Bristol Council and local community groups. You can find out more information about the St Andrews Park here.

There are a number of great reasons to advertise with us on gloucester-rd.co.uk. Firstly we pride ourselves on being an active part of the community and we are working together with the Gloucester Road Traders Association to develop this website for the resident, traders and many visitors who enjoy the Gloucester Road in Bristol.
We are traders on the Gloucester Road and have a vested interest in the websites success and as residents of the local area we do not look at the whole website purely from a commercial point of view. When we built the site it was as much to promote the area for our own businesses on the Gloucester Road as it was to show a willingness to get involved with local people and other like minded traders.
Now a little further down the line and with a growing number of visitor to gloucester-rd.co.uk we are developing some of the potential commercial avenues. But, as you will see from our pricing structures, this has been tailored to encourage everyone to get involved and every business is entitled to a totally FREE business listing. The builders have started just this week at 2-4 Gloucester Road to redevelop the site of the old Threshers and Master’s Snooker Hall above. I wasn’t sure what the old building was going to be a new supermarket until this morning!! I have watched all week the guys starting work there. The hoarding is an impressive piece of workmanship and colour co-ordinated as well with the old shop front!! They only finished it yesterday but someone has let their feelings be known already, painting NOBODY WANTS A SUPERMARKET HERE!!

Sainsbury’s have been in negotiations with Bristol City Council to take over what was the old Treshers off license at the start of Gloucester Road in Bristol. The first application a few months back was turned down but it appears the latest appeal has been upheld and work is already commencing on the premises.
Given the number of independant traders on the Gloucester Road in Bristol, it is pretty certain this latest addition will cause some controversy. Some might argue that it will bring a lot of new people into the area but of course it must have an impact of some of the businesses in the immediate area. The traditional corner shop is surely set to be hit quite hard but one would imagine that a number of business may be effected.
On the other hand there are usually certain types of business that will benefit. Local eateries, cafes and restaurants will hope to entice some of the extra foot fall through their door and a general increase in traffic may help to promote The Gloucester Road. Since it is going to happen anyway we may as well try and turn it to our advantage.

St Andrews park in Bishopston is heralded as a local haven for all ages. The local community have embraced the whole ethos of the park. There is so much enthusiasm and support that St Andrew’s Park is set to go from strength to strength. One of the recent initiatives that I read about in a publication called Bishopston Matter was that of protecting the park from anti social behavior. Popular Bristol based Channel 4 Series Skins is currently filming its fifth series – and last week the cast and crew descended on Gloucester rd, filming scenes at Sticky Neon and The Prom Bar.

The series is set in various locations around Bristol, and follows the reckless, hedonistic and generally debauched lives of a group of Bristol teenagers as they run amok all over the city. The makers of the programme say they try to avoid the usual landmarks like the Suspension Bridge, and aim instead for settings with a little more quirky character. Gloucester Rd was therefore a perfect location! The Prom opened up its doors to the cast and crew to have scenes filmed on their beer terrace. Filming took all day, and caused quite a stir on the road. Unfortunately, as the series is still in its production stages, we were unable to publish any photos of the new cast, as their identity is still a secret. However, here are some photos of the cast and crew in action. It’s good to know that our lovely area is getting some of the recognition and publicity it deserves, and that Bristol’s young acting talent has such a high profile platform on which to prove its worth.

Prom’s long serving sound engineer Martin Moss has been fighting cancer since the shock of his diagnosis last September. Following two operations and intensive chemotherapy he is doing well, but the disease is not expected to go away with conventional methods.

There is however a treatment (Selective Internal Radiation Therapy), extensively used outside the UK, with trials here supported by the Bobby Moore Fund. Martin has been refused funding by the Bristol Primary Care Trust claiming that it is ‘experimental’. You can imagine that he has very choice words for their approach to this vital option. Not one to give up, he has however managed to arrange a self-funding option which will cost £20,000.

On hearing this, many local musicians and friends have immediately come out in force to help raise the funds in any way they can, donating gig fees, recording tracks for a CD compilation, putting on events both at The PROM and elsewhere. They are going under the banner of Mossfest.

Martin told us
‘The support I have received is amazing. I obviously expected some help from friends and family, but the amount of people who have gone out of their way to help has taken me completely by surprise. So many people’s lives have been effected by cancer, and I am in awe of how willing people have been to help with Mossfest. I am so thankful to anyone who has got involved’.

Prom bookkeeper Richard Cranswick has decided to help raise funds by going the extra mile – the extra 897 miles in fact – from John O’Groats to Lands End on a sponsored cycle ride. He will undertake the massive journey over 9 days starting on the 28th August.

Richard explained
‘I’ve been trying to get fit for a while, and this seemed like the obvious thing to do. It was my wife who suggested the sponsored journey – this way I can set myself a personal and gruelling goal, and raise money for a very worthy cause at the same time’.
